In English Digital

Happy to be sharing with the readers of my blog the February 2012 edition of 'In English Digital', where I am honored to have contributed an article on Critical Literacy. In the article, I report on my experience as part of Braz-Tesol's CL Sig, a few years back.

Question-making and classroom discussion on the written word will always play an important role in ELT. And MY question is: which opportunities are you providing in your lessons? Any unheard voices in text materials?

Thanks for 'stopping by,' and be sure and add your comments.

  1. Hi Lu,

Really enjoyed reading your article. It was well-written and I agree that critical literacy needs to have a stronger place in the classroom.

The avalanche intro + the painting went beautifully. I love Hokusai's work and we have one up in our appartment. The blues are amazing... it's odd to say but they really strike a chord with me.

    Congrats again on your article!

    Cheers, Brad

    1. Hey Brad,

Thanks so much for your very positive feedback; great to hear from you.

I totally agree that the artwork fit perfectly to the message I was trying to pass on. For that, I have to thank the good folks at IED.

And the idea of CL is something that I can really get into, especially when I see many of my students considering what is printed as 'the last word.' There's much to be considered beyond T/F questioning and comprehension checks. And I hope that we can run that extra mile in our lessons...the more the better.

The painting is amazing, isn't it? I was blessed to travel on gorgeous blue waters just last month, in Venezuela, and this painting takes me back to those gentle, swaying moves ... love it.

      Cheers,
      Lu

    2. Hi Lu,

I'm very happy you liked my choice of artwork! I always read every article carefully and try to express the ideas visually as well as I can before designing the pages. Of course, if everything fits well most people won't notice these things (and I suppose that's as it should be) but it's always nice when somebody does :)
